PDX SSCX WC 08!

Portland Singlespeed Cyclocross World Championships, this weekend!

Although it may not be a true UCI-sanctioned World Championship race, the Golden Speedo is a grand prize that is nearly as coveted as the blue Rainbow Jersey. As usual in Portland, this race is more about attitude and "scene" than it is about the race itself. Its every cycling punks ambition to be there, so that means half of Portland should show up sporting their tatoos and pierced junk.

At the USGP race in Kentucky a couple weeks ago I heard a young enthusiastic cyclocrosser talk about how he was accosted by the reknowned, or should I say notorious, Seattle official who is the head chief at the USGP series. The official yelled at the kid who was wearing cut-off jeans and a flannel shirt over his cycling race kit, "This isn't a Portland race where you can make a mockery of the sport by wearing costumes and getting drunk. Take off that outfit and dress appropriately."
