Because it was amazing!!!
We didn't exactly accomplish our outright plans which were to summit Jim Hill Mtn but we hit a nearby ridge and gained view of the route to the summit, but we'd run out of daylight. The ski down was sweet, but oh so short after the hours of skinning up. Steve decided to BC-it again tomorrow but i feel the urge to skate after burning the carbs out of my lungs at the Rendevous Mtn Race last weekend.
With a thermos of coffee in the car I drove home with a buzz in the evening light. I mused that missing out on the summit was not a problem: its not about the destination, its the journey and the experience, and having a set goal with which to judge success is not what backcountry travel, or travel, is at all about. We went out, we challenged ourselves, we learned, we had a helluva good time. a summit would have changed little about this. and we made it home safely to tell the tale and give it another go sometime if we choose.
Pictura del dia: tromping out from the trees towards our upward slog.
